"The new version of Aakash will be launched early next year," revealed HRD minister Kapil Sibal.
The new Aakash will feature a microprocessor of 800 megahertz which will quicken the download of online videos. The RAM of Aakash -2 will be increased to 1 GB, compared to the 256 MB of the previous version, and will enable multi tasking. Adding to the attraction, the new device will have an in built camera on the front for online chatting, and an enhanced touchscreen.
Aakash-2 is slated to be ready by February 2012, but the production requirement to provide the tablet to two million students will remain a challenge. The government expects that as in the case of Aakash-1, when three companies including India based Quad and London based Datawind came together, Aakash-2 will see a similar collaboration.
