China Racing to Build Super-Computing Centers

With an online population of around 500 million, China is vigorously racing to complete its construction of big, efficient and abundant datacenters as well as super-computer sites, especially with the development of national computer infrastructure in its latest five year plan.
chin

The massive construction of a supercomputing site in the Shenzhen province was noted last year at the IEEE Forum, by IBM’s vice president of deep computing- David Turek , as China's serious effort to develop itself in the field of supercomputing.

According to Steve Sams, VP of global site and facilities services (a unit of Global Technology Services), the Hebei Langfang Range Information Hub would be the centerpiece of China’s third development zone. The Hebei project is expected to be completed by 2016. Another data-center development project is underway in the province of Shanghai.

Local governments are providing their support and funding to this cause, and aim for the construction of as many as 20 data centers with time.

The past has seen China undergoing tides of growth, but none of them have been well-planned and organized said Rick Einhorn, worldwide director for HP's Critical Facilities Services group.

However, Sams said that the data centers under planning and current construction would be built according to the latest eco-friendly construction concepts.

Foreign companies and businesses such as IBM and HP along with businesses in the US will benefit greatly from this growth spurt, as emphasized by Einhorn. "We have more people in China focused on data center development and strategy than, I believe, in any country in the world," he said.

However, some analysts such as Michelle Bailey from IDC say some companies might not pick China as a center for international IT services as a result of its policies regarding “…ownership rights for data and other assets.” She said it would be interesting if China could evolve to keep in step with the market.

Other competitors in the race to build super-computing centers, as pointed out by Turek, include Europe, Japan and Russia.

LG Launching World's Biggest OLED TV

LG is all set to launch world’s biggest OLED TV panel in 2012 at Customer Electronics Show in January. Earlier Sony came up with 11.1 inch SonyDrive XEL-1, the first OLED TV that cost around 69600. But still, the biggest ultra thin TV is yet to come and LG has made it possible by creating a 55-inch ultra-thin OLED TV with 100,000:1 contrast ratio.

“Our objective has always been to actively define and lead emerging display technology markets,” said Sang Beom Han, CEO and Executive Vice President of LG Display. “Although OLED technology is seen as the future of TV display, the technology has been limited to smaller display sizes and by high costs, until now. LG Display’s 55-inch OLED TV panel has overcome these barriers.”

Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLED) are more advanced and has more advantage over existing LCDs. The OLED display transmits better image quality even in low ambient light and it is lighter and thinner compared to LCDs. As per the company, the 55-inch OLED model that is 5 millimeters thick would be the largest OLED display so far with the white OLED technology giving the best-quality images. The price and availability details are not yet disclosed.

LG’s Press release states “The panel adopts an Oxide TFT technology for backplane which is different from a Low Temperature Poly Silicon (LTPS) type generally used in existing small-sized OLED panels. Moreover, the Oxide TFT type produces identical image quality to high performance of LTPS base panels at significantly reduced investment levels”.

However, Samsung is also planning to unveil its 55-inch OLED TV at CES in 2012. So, LG will be facing a big time competition with this huge player in the TV market for this vertical too.

2012: A Year of Mobile Threats

2011 witnessed convoluted malware attacks on the mobile field. The end of 2011 showed a 4 percent increase in the mobile attacks compared to the first quarter. Adding to it, the global yearly likelihood of an android user clicking on a malicious link reached to a 36 percent and the trend is not going to end as 2012 is predicted to be the year of mobile malware.
mobile

The android world keeps on evolving; so are the malwares. The malware developers took an estimated $1 million from android users this year and are planning on looting more. The smart phones are most vulnerable targets as they are rich in applications and data, are tied to the payment processing services, and usually have less security compared to the PC’s.

The expected threats will be on various levels like SMS/Fraud calls, mobile botnets, and vulnerable smart devices. The SMS malware raises primary threat as they are the easiest tie into a transaction infrastructure. Google has removed 22 applications from the android market last month as they are found to charge customers by sending and receiving messages on their behalf. Botnets include a connection of infected mobiles which have the capacity of infecting other phones. 10 families of botnets were discovered in the late 2011 and the number is expected to increase in the coming year. Also security holes in the numerous smart phones will be a driving factor.

The threats are building up as there are new ways of speeding up the process to save the time and money of a malware writer. One process is “Automated repackaging” where the repackaged, infected versions of applications are released into the third party markets. “Malvertising” is another process where a genuine looking advertisement will lead the user to a fraudulent site. The PC based attacks like fraudulent websites, e-mails are also finding their way into the android market as the number of users accessing the internet from smart devices is going to touch a whole time high.

The applications which are more likely to come up with threats are games, utility and porn. So the mobile users are warned to take extreme precautions while downloading and installing the vast applications as they may be stepping into a trap, unknowingly.

LG Smartphone 'Fantasy' with Windows Mango

LG’s only contribution to the Smartphone market till now is its Jil Sander Mobile. However it seems like LG is coming up with a new Smartphone with Window Phone 7.5 (Mango) OS named as ‘Fantasy’ (for the time being). The information about this new device is leaked from a XDA forum member who bought a prototype of this device in Romania. This new LG gadget seems to have 4" IPS screen, Microsoft’s latest mobile OS, an 8 megapixel camera along with a single-core Snapdragon chip. Mystery still prevails about its internal storage and other customer applications.

Nothing is quite certain about this new device and its specifications. The Romanian tester who possesses this device states that it is expected to lunch in the first quarter of 2012. As this is a prototype there are chances that we will never see this device in the market.

The best places were LG will be showcasing this new entrant into the Smartphone world would be CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in January or MWC (Mobile World Congress) in February. If this LG ‘Fantasy’ comes alive there will be a big time competition with other handsets running on Window Phone 7.5 (Mango) like HTC ‘Titan’, Samsung ‘Omnia W’ and Nokia ‘Lumia 800’.

Samsung Galaxy S and Tab, No Ice Cream Sandwich for You!

The latest version of Google’s Mobile Operating System - Ice Cream Sandwich or Android 4.0- will not be available for Galaxy S and the 7-inch Galaxy Tab. In late November Samsung promised an up-gradation of OS for both Galaxy S and Tab, which now seems to be broken. The reason behind this omission of up-gradation is due to the additional software features in these devices like TouchWiz, widgets, video calling and carrier software pack-ins. TouchWiz is given the major blame due to which these devices doest have enough RAM or ROM to contain all Samsung-designed accoutrements without affecting the quality of use.

The confusing fact is that Galaxy S is very much similar to the recently launched Galaxy Nexus which runs on Android 4.0. Samsung explains that “Nexus runs solely on Android without the addition of Samsung’s TouchWiz UI. Hence, the Galaxy S would probably not be able to cope with the implementation of ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich), along with TouchWiz”. As there is no problem with Galaxy S’s 1-GHz Cortex A8 processor or RAM, which are perfectly capable to run the Android 4.0, its Samsung’s UI that obstructs Galaxy S from having the ICS update. This point out the fact that if TouchWiz is removed from Galaxy S, the device might be capable of running the vanilla version of Ice Cream Sandwich without much trouble even though the experience will not that perfect.

There is going to be a vex in the minds of Samsung Smartphone and Tablet users due the barring of Ice Cream Sandwich for Galaxy S and Tab. Users are expecting a third party developer to come up with some new techniques to make these devices portable with the new OS. Other players like Motorola and HTC will be coming up with their ICS updates for their Smartphone and Tablets in another three to six months.

The laptop has been around for quite some time, but it will more than likely be replaced as the tool for computing. The successor of it will be the tablet which is commonly used. Tablets have been incredibly helpful that is technologically developed at present, reports Jack Wallen of Tech Public.

As tablets have more features than that of laptops, it is afforded by businessmen and others in the society as it helps to finish work in a lot more comfortable manner. Here are some reasons why tablets will replace the laptops as the mobile device of choice.

Power consumption

Power consumption
The tablet blows away the laptop with regard to power consumption. With a single charge, it can be used at least for a day. Regarding laptops, this is completely different and losing power is just another obstacle that interferes with work. With a tablet this can be solved as it would be a rare occasion that you would burn through your power before getting access to a means of recharging.

Viruses

Viruses
It's pretty safe to have tablets that will never suffer from the same deluge of viruses that plagues a Windows laptop. A tablet can safely work on without concern for viruses and malware. Having antivirus software in the Android Market, which is pointless, cannot be trusted. Anyone in the world wants to work with a portable device that is not vulnerable to the masses of viruses and malware out in the present world which is moving with competitiveness.

Portability

Portability
It is not easy to carry a 4 to 12 pound laptop, but a 5 pound tablet is easily portable. It is helpful while travelling to places like airports, taxis, hotels, conferences, meetings etc. The choice of the users will be the tablet every time. But it is not just because of weight. The ability to work with a tablet in confined spaces totally overshadows the laptop. You can't beat the tablet for portability which is the selection of all masses in the society.

Cost effectiveness

Cost effectiveness
A really good tablet will cost about the same as a low to mid range laptop. So a user is getting more for his money at the outset. On the other hand, when it is figured about the price of an extra battery and software for the laptop and quickly the cost will add up and gradually rises which makes users pay more unnecessarily. Tablets are fast becoming one of the most cost effective office tools which are increasing in the market concentrating on users as to what exactly they need.

Online Connection

Online Connection
By paying the extra fee, a user can get the tablet with a 4G connection, and don't have to worry about finding a Wi-Fi connection to access whatever cloud or service they need. Most models can be purchased with a constant network connection (to the tune of 3G or 4G), which makes the tablet a step ahead of most laptops. Though a user can purchase aircards for laptops, but that's just another piece of hardware to worry about and has to be paid for it also.

Available applications

Available applications
There are thousands of applications now available for tablets. So many in number and variety are these applications, it almost makes going back to a laptop a real pain. A good portion of those apps are worthless, but not all of them. And a good portion of the solid, useful apps are free. Best of all, those apps can be installed from anywhere without installation media. If there is a network connection, a user can install software. By these apps a user can make use of it in his work in the ways it supports.

User friendliness

User friendliness
Tablet interfaces are probably some of the single most user-friendly desktops that a user will come across. They are simple, elegant, and don't get in the way of work. The applications were also designed with amazing user friendliness in mind. Simple to use, very little clutter to the interface and singular in purpose.

So a user might have more apps installed than he would have on a laptop, but because of the ease of installation/removal, this doesn't emerge as a problem.

Bluetooth connectivity

Bluetooth connectivity
Headphones, headsets, keyboards, can be easily connected to it within no time and tablets make the connection between these devices a breeze. Connecting those same devices to a laptop is not an easy task. Even with a built in card, the connection process is not nearly as easy as it is when done from a tablet. Laptops when considered of doing these jobs lags behind because of the lack of getting connectivity as faster than compared to the pace of a tablet.

Efficiency

Efficiency
Getting a laptop and a tablet and checking its competence in efficiency will bring neck to neck competition which finally ends tablet in winning for its fast working. Tablets are as close to an instant on tool that has been in the industry and when on the go, nothing beats instant on. Need to write a note or send off a fast email, you will be able to complete it much more quickly when doing it from a tablet rather than laptop.

Social integration

Social integration
According to some, social networking is not ideal for business use. But in the real context, it's different. Even when anyone moves out for work, they need to remain in contact with co-workers, family, and friends. It can be done with the ease of nearly seamless integration by forgetting having to use a browser for everything.
